My brother, Pierre Jaquier, finished his "master of microengineering" final project a few days ago. He built an electric scooter which does not require any manual control. A Texas Instrument DSP detects the user impulsions and provides an assistance which simulates the deceleration on a flat surface.
The scooter is really small and lightweighted compared to commercial product. However, it is quite expensive because it is powered by a brushless motor and good LiPo batteries. Not ready for production yet You can see a demo of the iTrott on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22SJIETean4
